Intel Core i9-12900KS ‘The World’s Fastest Desktop CPU’ Goes On Sale at Newegg For $799 US

The Intel Core i9-12900KS is the fastest CPU on the planet in terms of clock speeds. No CPU before it has featured an out-of-box clock speed of 5.5 GHz and the 12900KS does it like a piece of cake. It remains to be seen how much of a performance bump the chip offers over the Core i9-12900K and we have seen leaks showcasing up to 5-10% multi-threaded. The chip will also be competing with AMD’s Ryzen 9 5950X in multi-threaded and Ryzen 7 5800X3D in gaming performance. The CPU is already showcasing better multi-threaded performance versus the 5950X and the 5.5 GHz clocks will definitely lead to faster gaming performance so it can be seen as a complete package, offering the best multi-threaded and gaming performance. As for pricing, the CPU is priced at the same MSRP as the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X at $799.99 US. Both chips feature 16 cores but the Intel Core i9-12900KS has 24 threads while the 5950X offers a total of 32 threads. The 12900KS does offer higher multi-threaded efficiency and gaming performance will be a huge win for the blue-chip. As for the pricing, while it’s high, users can always get the ‘K’ variant which offers similar performance. Newegg didn’t seem to update its specification page as it still lists down 241W MTP for the chip whereas it should be rated at 260W. Intel Core i9-12900KS 5.5 GHz CPU Specifications The Intel Core i9-12900KS will be the flagship chip in the 12th Gen Alder Lake Desktop CPU lineup. It will feature 8 Golden Cove cores and 8 Gracemont cores for a total of 16 cores (8+8) and 24 threads (16+8). The P-cores (Golden Cove) will operate at a maximum boost frequency of up to 5.5 GHz with 1-2 active cores and 5.2 GHz with all-cores active while the E-cores (Gracemont) will operate at 3.90 GHz across 1-4 cores and up to 3.7 GHz when all cores are loaded. The CPU will feature 30 MB of L3 cache. The main change is that to accommodate the higher frequency, Intel has upped the base TDP by 25 Watts over the Core i9-12900K. As such, the 12900KS will feature a base TDP of 150W, and the max turbo power rating has also been bumped by 19W to 260W (vs 241W). Intel has yet to launch the chip officially but that could happen in the next couple of days & motherboard makers have also started releasing their respective support BIOS with updated microcode for the chip.
